We the Citizens is not a political party, its not a movement, its not even a lobbying group. - So what is it?
An idea, I guess, and an idea that has been well funded by Chuck Feeney of The Atlantic Philanthropies.
It held its first meeting, or gathering, or event in Kilkenny last week and, as you can see, a fair proportion of the Nunn family attended.
Naoise attended as a background adviser and organiser, Sue had done interviews on The Sue Nunn Show with the promotors and oganisers and I went as a participant to what turned out to be a brainstoming discussion about why and how we have found ourselves where we are and how we might work ourselves out of the mess.
Whilst the originators of the event are too polite to say so overtly, the sub-text is plainly that it is politicians who have caused us to sink as low as we have and they, and our present administrative structures, are not equal to the task of getting us up and running again.
The implication is that We the Citizens are somehow better equipped to move the nation forward.
It is a worthy notion - I think - and it was a worthwhile evening - I think - but, from what transpired in Kilkenny, I fear that it will prove to be too middle class, middle aged and polite to make much of an impact......
We shall see.................
